Moving money in Ecuador

Currency exchange and money transfers

Whether you need to change cash or transfer money from abroad, you have several choices in Ecuador. Below we’ve detailed the best options.

Ecuador’s use of the dollar makes the money exchange process much easier. The currency and rates of exchange are familiar to most foreigners, so it’s easy to see whether you’re getting a good deal. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to get yourself some dollars before you arrive in Ecuador as bureaux de changes (casas de cambio) have almost disappeared since dollarization. Those that remain are normally open from 9 AM until 6 PM Monday to Friday and until at least noon on Saturdays. Euros, Peruvian nuevos soles and Colombian pesos are the easiest currencies to exchange.

If you’re considering bank transfers from overseas, bear in mind that there can be high fees involved, especially if using wire transfers (these are nearly always a bad idea, except in emergencies). Consider speaking to a specialist foreign exchange broker such as Skrill  or HiFX , particularly if transferring large sums for property investment. Fees can vary, so make sure you shop around before committing.

Money transfers within Ecuador are fairly straightforward and can be done quickly using internet banking, or in a branch.
